Advantages of a Prepaid Credit Card

In today’s fast-paced society, payment with cash can be too slow and writing a check with several people waiting in line behind you can seem to take a lifetime.

Credit cards are the ultimate convenience, but are not suitable for everyone. However, there is another option: prepaid credit cards.

A prepaid credit card works similarly to a debit or bank card or a gift card.

A consumer can purchase a card at many retailers, banks or even on-line and “load” it with a predetermined amount of cash. They can be paid for by using cash or a check. The card is then used as a normal credit card at any store or online. Most cards can be re-loaded with additional cash as needed, rather than buying a new card. Though there are fees associated with these cards, usually only at the point of loading or reloading cash, they are usually minimal.

There are many advantages to using one of these cards over carrying cash.

If you lose the card or it is stolen, you can simply report it and have the remaining balance transferred to a new card. Also, it can be much easier to just carry one small card instead of fumbling with paper money and coins when checking out at a store. The greatest advantage of a prepaid card is mostly for young adults and others who have limited resources and/or difficulty controlling their spending.
